Brilliant Minds!

Finally!! Warm sunny weather has hopefully come to stay! This spring was so cool and rainy that getting to the beach wasn’t an option for long or very often. After the last 2 weekends of gorgeous weather in Virginia Beach, it became apparent what my next blog should be: skin care and sun protection. And brilliant minds think alike! In this week’s Virginian-Pilot was an  Associated Press article touting the benefits of using sunscreen on a regular daily basis, stating those that did had  24% less skin aging than those who used sunscreen sporadically. And less sun-caused aging decreases the risk of skin cancer long term.

When I hold my 1 month old grandson and look at his beautiful skin, untouched by the sun, I am so happy, knowing that his parents will keep him in sunscreen once he’s old enough to use it.

Even though most of us are past the pristine skin stage, it’s not too late to up your protection. If you don’t already, start using moisturizer with sunscreen daily. There are many drugstore brands available. Make sure zinc is one of the active ingredients to give you the protection you need. Keep your exposure to the sun at a maximum of 2 hours a day. If that’s not possible, make sure to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and/or after being in the water. Always wear a sun visor, wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap to provide additional protection for your face and décolletage.

Many of us though, grew up in the era of using things such as Crisco, butter, baby oil with iodine, or even nothing on our skin to rapidly progress our tans. Little did we know that those hours spent worshipping the sun would come back to haunt us now, and we need a more  “in-depth” approach, more than what over the counter products can achieve.

The Carney Center has some great new skincare products from the SkinMedica line that many of us in the office have been using to see how they work and are very happy with the results. (more on those results my next blog post!)

SkinMedica’s products work to counteract the effects of time and contain active ingredients that work below the skin’s surface to regenerate the health of the skin.

Come see us in either Newport News or Virginia Beach and see how we can help you make the right choices for your skin and health–another forward step in the goal of making YOU a priority this year, looking and feeling your best!!!
