Tummy Tuck

Introduction

Introduction to Tummy Tuck

Sometimes, no matter how much you eat healthily or exercise, your stomach may still appear uneven. Whether it’s loose skin from pregnancy, stretched muscles after weight changes, or the natural effects of aging, sometimes we just need a little boost to make a difference.

At The Carney Center in Virginia Beach, tummy tuck surgery (also known as abdominoplasty) helps patients regain control of their shape by removing excess skin, tightening weakened abdominal muscles, and restoring a flatter, firmer, more contoured midsection. Whether you’ve been dreaming of wearing your favorite clothes more comfortably or just feeling good looking in the mirror, we’re here to help you make it real.

“From diets to exercise, nothing worked to give me that flatter tummy that I longed for…until Dr. Carney recommended abdominoplasty. It feels wonderful to be able to put on my favorite pair of jeans again comfortably!” – Carol R., Portsmouth, VA

What is a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty, sometimes called the “tummy tuck,” is a procedure that can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen.

The procedure firms and smooths the abdomen by tightening the abdominal muscles and removing the lower abdomen’s extra fatty tissue and skin

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are reasonably close to their normal weight, but with loose, sagging, excess abdominal skin, weakened abdominal muscles due to aging or pregnancy, or an abdomen that is out of proportion to the rest of the body. Abdominoplasty improves women and men of all sizes and shapes. Occasionally, Dr. Carney recommends that a patient lose weight before surgery.

If you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly, the results of a tummy tuck are usually long-lasting.

  • If your concerns are mainly below the belly button and you don’t need full abdominal muscle tightening, a mini-tummy tuck could be the ideal option. This less invasive version of the traditional abdominoplasty focuses on the lower abdomen, removing small amounts of loose skin and tightening minor muscle separation. It involves a shorter incision, a quicker recovery, and no need for belly button repositioning.

What Are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck isn’t just about cosmetic improvement; it can also restore confidence and comfort in your body. Here are some of the most common benefits our patients experience:

  • A flatter, firmer midsection
  • Removal of loose, sagging skin
  • Tightened abdominal muscles (especially after pregnancy or weight loss)
  • Reduced appearance of stretch marks (especially below the navel)
  • A more contoured silhouette that fits clothing more comfortably
  • Long-lasting results when paired with a healthy lifestyle

In some cases, a tummy tuck may also improve posture and reduce lower back discomfort due to strengthened core muscles.

Is Abdominoplasty For You?

This procedure is most effective for individuals in good physical condition who have loose abdominal skin that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. If your expectations are realistic and you are prepared for the recovery time, abdominoplasty may be the answer.

Keep in mind the possibility of partial or “mini” abdominoplasty, which removes excess skin below the navel and requires only a small incision. Liposuction or LipoSelection are also good options.

How Tummy Tuck Works

Incisions are made just above the pubic area to free the navel from surrounding tissue. Muscles are tightened by stitching them close together, creating a firmer abdominal wall and narrower waistline. The skin is then stretched down, and the extra skin is removed. Your navel will be stitched into a new position appropriate to its new surroundings.

Abdominoplasty is a major procedure that usually takes two to three hours. In partial abdominoplasty, skin is separated only between the incision line and the navel. This skin flap is stretched down, the excess is removed, and it is stitched back into place. A partial abdominoplasty can typically be completed in under two hours.

After Treatment

Depending on the extent of the surgery, patients can expect to be released within a few hours of surgery or may stay for extended recovery at The Carney Center. Medication can control any discomfort.

You should start walking as soon as possible. Special instructions will be given for showering. The surface stitches will be removed in approximately one week, and the deeper sutures will be removed in less than two weeks.
