Martin J. Carney, M.D., F.A.C.S., has been providing high quality cosmetic surgery in Hampton Roads since 1986. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify plastic surgeons. Dr. Carney lives in Virginia Beach with his wife, Nadia, and their four children.

Dr. Martin Carney was born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA. He returned home to join his father in practice and serve the community where he grew up. Following a research fellowship at the prestigious Penn Plastic Surgery, Dr. Carney spent six years in an integrated plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Yale University.

EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATOR
Nadia Carney has been with The Carney Center since its inception in 1992. She received her BA in communications from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Her long time commitment to and knowledge of the cosmetic and plastic surgery industry has contributed greatly to the overall expansion and success of the company. In her administrative role, Nadia acts as patient coordinator, educating patients about all aspects of surgery and other procedures so they are fully informed and prepared for what to expect. She serves clients as their main point of contact from beginning to end, answering any questions along the way. Whether your visit is for skin care or surgical services, Nadia helps ensure that your experience is positive and comforting.
CLINICAL COORDINATOR
Elaine West-Watson, RN, BSBA, received her degree from Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1977 and began her career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in pediatric intensive care. Today, she has a total of more than 40 years of experience in intensive care, long term care, and in Surgical Services. After many years of service in Maryland, Elaine moved to Virginia and joined The Carney Center in 2003 as Clinical Coordinator, assisting Dr. Carney with surgical procedures, consultations and patient education. Elaine is responsible for all clinical and quality improvement activities for the Virginia Beach and Newport News offices. Having worked in various areas of the medical industry, she particularly enjoys the field of cosmetic and plastic surgery.
OPERATING ROOM TECHNICIAN
Sandy Morris received her degree as a certified operating room technician in 1971 from Riverside Regional Medical Center. She began her career early on as a surgical technician at Riverside and other local hospitals and then joined The Carney Center in 1992. Sandy assists Dr. Carney with all surgical procedures and consultations in both the Newport News and Virginia Beach offices. She is a partner with her patients from beginning to end and enjoys leading everyone through a positive surgical experience.
CLINICAL NURSE
Margaret “Maggie” Penix graduated from Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing in 1980, and began her career at Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk, VA, working on the Infants and Toddlers Unit and Post Anesthesia Care Unit. Taking time off from nursing to raise a family of 3 children, she returned to nursing in 2010, and has been working part time at The Carney Center since 2011. She also works full time as a school nurse with the Virginia Beach City Schools and part time with CHKD Urgent Care. When you see her in the office, you aren’t seeing double. Elaine and Maggie are sisters!
NURSE INJECTOR
Lisa Childress, RN, BSN has been a registered nurse since 2003 and graduated from VCU School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 2005. Before joining the Carney Center in 2005 she worked as an ICU and Cardiothoracic RN. She currently works as a clinical skincare and injection specialist. She works closely with Dr. Carney in the operating room, and recovery room to ensure that facial aesthetic surgery patients are prepped and ready for their surgery. Her extensive knowledge of pre and post laser treatments helps patients heal quickly after facial surgeries including laser resurfacing. Lisa has continued her aesthetic nursing training as a specialist in injectable modalities including neuromodulators and fillers. She also supports the Carney Center with radio frequency tightening and vaginal rejuvenation procedures to ensure the best results for both surgical and non-surgical patients. She believes that a team based in holistic practice is the best prescription for results that last a lifetime.
AESTHETICIAN
Sommer Nadelstein, LE, has been a licensed aesthetician since 2005, receiving her training from Virginia Institute of Esthetics. In the past, she has owned her own skin spa, “Skin Studio,” and is now thrilled to bring her passion for skin care to The Carney Center. Sommer is well versed in many of the latest innovative facial rejuvenation techniques including dermaplaning and microneedling, and also performs chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, Pixel Fractional skin resurfacing and IPL Photo facials. When not at the Carney Center, she loves spending time with her husband and son, boating and traveling as well as cooking, dancing and going to the theater.
CERTIFIED SURGICAL ASSISTANT
Jeff Watson, CSA attended Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii after his tour as a “devil doc” with the Fleet Marine Force, United States Marine Corp. He sat for his boards as a certified surgical assistant upon discharge and worked as a multispeciality first surgical assistant at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond as well as Chesapeake Medical Center in Tidewater. He served as National Product Manager for Arthrex America, assisting with Arthrex’s initial expansion to the United States.
NEWPORT NEWS RECEPTIONIST
Debbie Edmonds joined the Carney Center in 2016 working primarily as our front office receptionist in our Newport News office. Her prior experience in the financial industry has equipped her to provide our patients with superior customer service whether it be in person or on the phone.
MICROPIGMENTATION MAKEUP SPECIALIST
Mary He is The Carney Center’s micropigmentation makeup specialist. She received her degree in cosmetology from the Lobonke Institute of Technology in Japan and has more than 25 years of experience in her field. Mary specializes in the careful application of pigment into the skin for eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner, complete lip shape reconstruction, birthmarks, the areola (after reconstructive surgery of mastectomy patients), scar camouflage for hypo and hyper-pigmented scars (including burn victims and vitiligo patients), spider veins, and hair simulation (alopecia patients).
