Meet The Team

Martin J. Carney, M.D., F.A.C.S., has been providing high quality cosmetic surgery in Hampton Roads since 1986. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify plastic surgeons. Dr. Carney lives in Virginia Beach with his wife, Nadia, and their four children.

Dr. Martin Carney was born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA. He returned home to join his father in practice and serve the community where he grew up. Following a research fellowship at the prestigious Penn Plastic Surgery, Dr. Carney spent six years in an integrated plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Yale University.

Nadia Carney has been with The Carney Center since its inception in 1992. She received her BA in communications from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Her long time commitment to and knowledge of the cosmetic and plastic surgery industry has contributed greatly to the overall expansion and success of the company. In her administrative role, Nadia acts as patient coordinator, educating patients about all aspects of surgery and other procedures so they are fully informed and prepared for what to expect. She serves clients as their main point of contact from beginning to end, answering any questions along the way. Whether your visit is for skin care or surgical services, Nadia helps ensure that your experience is positive and comforting.

Elaine West-Watson, RN, BSBA, received her degree from Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1977 and began her career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in pediatric intensive care. Today, she has a total of more than 40 years of experience in intensive care, long term care, and in Surgical Services. After many years of service in Maryland, Elaine moved to Virginia and joined The Carney Center in 2003 as Clinical Coordinator, assisting Dr. Carney with surgical procedures, consultations and patient education. Elaine is responsible for all clinical and quality improvement activities for the Virginia Beach and Newport News offices. Having worked in various areas of the medical industry, she particularly enjoys the field of cosmetic and plastic surgery.

Sandy Morris received her degree as a certified operating room technician in 1971 from Riverside Regional Medical Center. She began her career early on as a surgical technician at Riverside and other local hospitals and then joined The Carney Center in 1992. Sandy assists Dr. Carney with all surgical procedures and consultations in both the Newport News and Virginia Beach offices. She is a partner with her patients from beginning to end and enjoys leading everyone through a positive surgical experience. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her five grandchildren.

Rebecca Phelps, RN, received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010. She started her nursing career at Maryview Medical Center, and prior to joining The Carney Center, she was serving as a U.S. Diplomat at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece. Rebecca brings her love of diversity and people to her work at The Carney Center. Rebecca enjoys baking, running, and spending time in nature with her family.

Sommer Nadelstein, LE, has been a licensed aesthetician since 2005, receiving her training from Virginia Institute of Esthetics. In the past, she has owned her own skin spa, “Skin Studio,” and is now thrilled to bring her passion for skin care to The Carney Center. Sommer is well versed in many of the latest innovative facial rejuvenation techniques including dermaplaning and microneedling, and also performs chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, Pixel Fractional skin resurfacing and IPL Photo facials. When not at the Carney Center, she loves spending time with her husband and son, boating and traveling as well as cooking, dancing and going to the theater.

Monique Earley is a Master Esthetician and laser specialist and has owned a full day spa. With over two decades in the aesthetic industry, Monique brings a unique blend of clinical expertise. Before opening her business, she served as a patient counselor for a cosmetic surgery practice. With these qualifications, she guides patients through their aesthetics journey with empathy and insight. This background gives her a deep understanding in both a non-invasive and surgical cosmetic procedure, allowing her to tailor results-driven treatment plans with honesty and precision.

Jennfier Rothwell, LME, NCLT, is a native of Hampton Roads and a dog mom of 3. She attended Chrysm School of Esthetics and has been a master esthetician and laser technician since 2006. She has worked with cosmetic and dermatology practices for 18 years. She is an animal lover; rescuing, fostering, and training dogs in her free time. She loves helping to improve others’ skin, as well as their confidence!

Erica Farrer provides high-level organization and administrative duties throughout both offices, which allows for support on both a patient and clinical basis. Before joining the team, she worked as a Surgery Coordinator for an ENT with Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. She is a local to Virginia Beach, with a passion for cooking. When she’s not at The Carney Center, she can be found curating charcuterie boards for her small business, and filming weddings worldwide.

Debbie Edmonds joined the Carney Center in 2016 working primarily as our front office receptionist in our Newport News office. Her prior experience in the financial industry has equipped her to provide our patients with superior customer service whether it be in person or on the phone.

Victoria Boehmer joined The Carney Center in 2020 as our bookkeeper. With her bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University in New York, and her background in financials, she further aids us in filing insurance claims. She is determined to help make every patient a happy patient.

Jeff Watson, CSA attended Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii after his tour as a “devil doc” with the Fleet Marine Force, United States Marine Corp. He sat for his boards as a certified surgical assistant upon discharge and worked as a multispeciality first surgical assistant at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond as well as Chesapeake Medical Center in Tidewater. He served as National Product Manager for Arthrex America, assisting with Arthrex’s initial expansion to the United States.

Mary He is The Carney Center’s micropigmentation makeup specialist. She received her degree in cosmetology from the Lobonke Institute of Technology in Japan and has more than 25 years of experience in her field. Mary specializes in the careful application of pigment into the skin for eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner, complete lip shape reconstruction, birthmarks, the areola (after reconstructive surgery of mastectomy patients), scar camouflage for hypo and hyper-pigmented scars (including burn victims and vitiligo patients), spider veins, and hair simulation (alopecia patients).
