Introduction

Introduction to Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a procedure that corrects structural concerns or enhances the appearance of your nose, making it more proportionate to your face. Most nose reshaping procedures are for cosmetic purposes. However, the procedure can also be valuable in the wake of congenital effects or an injury resulting in a change in shape or damage to internal structures, which may affect breathing. Rhinoplasty can be combined with other procedures to enhance facial proportions and achieve greater harmony. If you are looking for a rhinoplasty in Virginia Beach, the Carney Center should be your choice of surgical practice. Please read below for more information.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure that changes the size or shape of the nose to address aesthetic or functional goals. A nose job can target any of the nasal elements, which consist of the upper bone area, the lower cartilage area, and the skin. There are various types of rhinoplasty procedures as indicated below:

  • Functional: This type of rhinoplasty focuses on enhancing nasal breathing by restoring a deviated septum and easing the nasal breathing pathways.
  • Revisional: As the name implies, this rhinoplasty is performed to improve upon a previous rhinoplasty that went wrong. It is a complicated surgery, as the nasal elements may have been compromised by a previous surgery, making it more vulnerable.
  • Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty: Non-surgical, or liquid rhinoplasty, is a non-invasive technique to alter the size and shape of the nose using dermal filler injections. As expected, this is a quick result and low-downtime rhinoplasty.

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting a rhinoplasty in Virginia Beach is to schedule a consultation at The Carney Center with one of our expert surgeons. During the appointment, your surgeon will inquire about your medical history, aesthetic and functional goals, concerns, and expectations. They will also thoroughly examine your nasal elements to determine the best incision points and techniques to achieve your aesthetic and/or functional goals. During this time, they will also outline the various types of rhinoplasties available at the practice, along with the associated risk-benefit analysis of each, so that you can make the best decision for your specific profile.

If you both decide to move forward, your surgeon will create a surgical plan for you to share with our patient coordinator, who will provide scheduling and pricing options, as well as any pre-operative instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Usually, rhinoplasty procedures are done under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Some patients with more extensive airway problems may require general anesthesia.

A rhinoplasty can be performed “open” or “closed”. In a closed rhinoplasty, the incision is made on the inside of the nose, whereas in an open rhinoplasty, the incision is made on the columella or the bridge between the nostrils. Once the surgeon has access to the underlying tissue, it is pulled up and over the nose, providing necessary access to the nose to make significant changes. The type of incision used varies depending on the extent of the procedure.

Rhinoplasty surgery takes approximately 90 minutes. More complicated reconstructive procedures may take longer.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

After the surgery, you will have an external nasal splint and cool compresses over your eyes. You will be able to go home shortly after the procedure.

Pain medication may be used to control discomfort on the first day after surgery. Your splint will be removed five to seven days later, and you will have an idea of your final result. Many patients return to work as early as three to four days. You should be able to resume full exercise routines within four to six weeks.
