What Are BOTOX® and Wrinkle Relaxers?

Botox is a prescription drug made from a toxin and was initially used clinically for the treatment of neurological disorders such as migraines and muscle spasms. The Food and Drug Administration has now approved its use for cosmetic purposes.

Available by prescription only, this popular drug offers a safe and effective way to reduce and smooth facial lines by weakening the muscles that cause frowning. Studies have revealed that the severity of frown lines in patients injected with Botox is reduced for up to 120 days. The FDA recommends that Botox only be injected once every three months, using the lowest effective dosage.

  • Our most popular neuromodulator, BOTOX®, is known for relaxing muscles and effectively treating soft lines in smaller, targeted areas. BOTOX results typically last three to six months.

  • Daxxify is an FDA-approved neuromodulator that offers longer-lasting results and a faster onset than BOTOX. Patients may notice results in a few days rather than a week or more, as with standard neuromodulators.

  • Dysport® is recommended for larger areas such as the forehead. This wrinkle relaxer spreads more widely and therefore requires fewer injections. Results may last up to four months.

  • Jeuveau® is best for targeting glabellar lines (the frown lines between the eyebrows) and has a faster onset than BOTOX. Results may last from three to four months.

  • Xeomin is a purified toxin that does not contain the additional proteins found in BOTOX and other neuromodulators, meaning there is a lower risk of developing an immune response that can lessen the effect of the wrinkle relaxer over time. Results may last up to six months.

What to Expect on the Day of BOTOX® and Wrinkle Relaxer Treatment

When you are ready to receive your BOTOX® or wrinkle relaxer treatment, your licensed medical aesthetician will cleanse and prep your skin for the injections, then carefully target the areas discussed in your consultation with your chosen wrinkle relaxer. The number of injections and the quantity of neuromodulators administered will depend on the extent of the treatment needed to relax the muscles and soften the lines. This process may take up to an hour, depending on the extent of the treatment. You may return home the same day.

BOTOX® and Wrinkle Relaxers Recovery

BOTOX® and wrinkle relaxers require little downtime for recovery. Most patients are able to resume their normal schedule almost immediately. Some patients may experience some discomfort following their injections, which can be soothed with an ice pack or taking a pain reliever.

Dr. Martin J. Carney’s son, Dr. Martin Carney III, is a fourth-generation surgeon. He offers a wide range of aesthetic surgery with a particular focus on the face. He strives for perfection in all aspects of his cosmetic practice to help patients achieve their goals.

Dr. Martin Carney III grew up in Virginia Beach, VA, and returned home to join his father, Dr. Martin J. Carney, in practice and serve the community. After attending high school at Norfolk Academy, he went to Tulane University on an academic scholarship where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He remained at Tulane University School of Medicine for his medical school, obtaining another academic scholarship.

Following a research fellowship at the prestigious Penn Plastic Surgery program, Dr. Carney III spent six years in an integrated plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Yale University, a premier training program. There, he learned state-of-the-art techniques in aesthetic surgery.

Dr. Carney III has published over 35 peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters, and has presented at national aesthetic and plastic surgery meetings across the country. He serves as a peer reviewer for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Staying up to date with the literature, Dr. Carney III brings the newest and most innovative techniques in plastic surgery to his practice.
