What’s the
first step?

The first step in getting chin & facial implants is to schedule a consultation with one of our expert surgeons at The Carney Center. During your consultation, be prepared to discuss your surgical goals, medical and surgical history, current medications, drug allergies, alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. Your surgeon will examine the target areas of your desired surgery, inquiring about your reasons for wanting surgery and your expectations. They will discuss the likely outcomes of facial implant surgery, as well as any risks or potential complications, to help manage your expectations. This is a great time to ask questions and share any ideas for combined procedures.

Once you and your surgeon agree to proceed, they will design your surgical plan, which you can take to our scheduling department.

What to Expect on the Day of Facial Implant Surgery

On the day of your facial implant surgery, depending on what type of facial implant you are getting, you will have a different experience.

  • Chin Surgery: Chin implants typically take between 30 minutes and an hour. During the procedure, Dr. Carney selects the implant of the proper size and shape to enhance your appearance and inserts it through a small incision over the front of the jawbone. The chin will be taped after surgery to help reduce swelling. Sutures used inside the mouth will dissolve on their own.
  • Cheek Surgery: Cheek implants typically take between 30 and 45 minutes. When cheek implants are performed in conjunction with another procedure, such as a facelift, forehead lift, or eyelid surgery, the implants can be placed through the incisions created for those procedures. Otherwise, an incision is made either inside the upper lip or where the implant is inserted. After surgery, a dressing is applied to minimize discomfort and swelling. Healing time will vary, depending on whether other procedures were performed simultaneously. The surgery generally takes less than an hour.
  • Lower Jaw Surgery: Jaw implants typically take between one and two hours. Internal incisions are made on either side of the lower lip, and a pocket is created for the implant. Dissolving sutures disappear within 7-10 days.

Chin/ Facial Implant Recovery

Patients will experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first week. Your surgeon will recommend avoiding strenuous activities, such as strength training or lifting heavy objects. Recovery will depend on the type of facial implant you receive:

  • RECOVERING FROM CHIN SURGERY: You may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the affected area for a few days.
  • RECOVERING FROM CHEEK SURGERY: Dr. Carney will provide you with post-operative instructions. The sutures inside your mouth will dissolve within 7 to 10 days.
  • RECOVERING FROM JAW SURGERY: You can expect swelling immediately following surgery, which will subside over several days. During the healing phase, certain activities and diet will be restricted. Dr. Carney will instruct you on dental and oral hygiene during your recovery.
