What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to rebuild the shape and appearance of one or both breasts after a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or traumatic injury. The procedure can be performed using breast implants, your body’s own tissue (flap techniques), or a combination of both.
There are two main types of breast reconstruction:
- Implant-based reconstruction involves placing a tissue expander, followed by a permanent silicone or saline implant.
- Autologous (flap) reconstruction: Uses tissue from another part of the body; commonly the abdomen, thigh, or back to recreate the breast mound.
Our expert plastic surgeons tailor each surgical plan to your unique anatomy, cancer treatment timeline, and preferences for recovery and long-term outcomes.
